Good News

Well, I have some exciting news.

I was promoted today. I'm now in charge of organizing the entirety of Chester County (with the necessary and substiantial assistance and teamwork of two other great organizers). The title is nominal to a large degree - I'll still be responsible for my area of the county, and they'll be responsible for theirs, but I'm now overseeing the County at-large. My team of Benari, Mia and Scott is fantastic, and obviously, nothing is really done without them and their help. So when I say I've been promoted, it really means I'm just finally responsible for the county in name. But we all share the load pretty equally. The buck stops at my desk. And I'm proud to say that; it's something that our current president won't say, and it's something that needs to be said more often by more leaders.

We're going to win this county, so make sure you look us up come November 3rd.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! About time they put you at the lead where you can make the most difference! Chester County is in good hands!

Went to a Moveon House Party tonight regarding education. It was really weird going to someone's home when I had no idea who they were. There was a total of 11 people there. We watched the video and had some lively discussion. There were a couple of women that have been really involved in the campaign for some time now. One woman told me about an organization call Mainstreet Moms Oppose Bush (www.themmob.com) who are working to get single women to the polls. People write personal letters to women on a list that the MMOB gives you to encourage them to vote. The woman said it was a great project and a lot of people were doing it. She was also talking about an organization called Election Protection where people are going to different cities (she is going to Phoenix) close to election time to help people get to the polls. According to her there is this group that are walking around with firearms on their body trying to intimidate minorities, in Phoenix Blacks and Indians, to not vote. I learned that there are a lot of disgusting things going on as far as this election is concerned and I had no idea that all of this was happening. They were talking about people that are not in the country, mainly military, that want to vote absenteeism who are having their access blocked if they are voting democrat. And the last one I will mention is they said there is a list of felons that their vote is not suppose to count, but the only thing, a lot of the names on that list are not felons, so those people's votes are not counting. Have no idea if any of this is true, but they seemed like credible people.

As for the education piece, since we were in an affluent area, we felt we were less affected than lower income areas, but the people that currently have children in school said that they were certainly loosing a lot of activities, less interesting electives to choose from and less assistance in getting into college, to name a few. We talked about the pressure on junior colleges, one man there taught at a junior college and he said he had to turn 80 students away today, there was not room for them in his class - he teaches math. The other professor teaches at Berkeley and he said they are gearing up to fund the hiring of more teachers, if they can get the funds. We talked a lot about the issues around the Leave No Child Behind and how is it so underfunded.

So all in all, it was very educational for me, got me in touch with a couple of activists in my home town and hopefully I will be able to do more in the next month. Sorry for going on, but it was quite enlightening for me and I thought I would actually write a political post for the first time!! sueb
